The Government is likely to announce in the budget today that every school in England will be turned into an academy by 2022.
This is the third phase of the academy movement which will see the remaining schools, the majority of which are primary schools, join multi-academy trusts.
The Government is accelerating the rate at which schools become academies following the approval of the education bill last month which introduced powers to enable the Government to force all failing and coasting schools to become academies.
What will this mean for your academy?
From previous announcements it is likely that in around 5 years’ time there will be no single academies so it is crucial that all single academies urgently review their strategy and consider their future – the earlier you do this the more likely you are to be able to join a multi-academy trust of your choice. Alternatively you could consider forming a multi-academy trust yourself with other schools/academies.
If you are already a multi-academy trust then you will have the opportunity to take on more schools, possibly as a sponsor.
The sector continues to move rapidly and it is important that you are on top of your options to ensure that you remain able to deliver the best results for children whilst moving forward with the sector.
As you know we are heavily involved in the sector and are keen to talk to all our clients about their plans. As usual, please don’t hesitate to discuss your thoughts with your usual Bishop Fleming contact.
